A Guide to Calgary’s Summer Festivals

When it comes to the topic of summer fun, Calgary can compete with any major city in the world. In addition to the annual Stampede, there are no less than 40 major festivals and countless smaller street fairs on the city’s summer calendar - celebrating everything from comedy to horror movies, food, food, music and theatre. Here is a quick guide to a few festivals you may wish to enjoy on a warm summer day.
Calgary Folk Music Festival – Held at Prince Island Park on the 4th weekend in July every year since 1980, this musical extravaganza has grown and emerged as a major player among all international music festivals. While attending performances by over 70 artists, attendees can enjoy a shaded beer garden; children’s play area, crafts, a record tent, good food and the company of 50,000 of your favourite Calgary neighbours. You never know when musicians will jam and mash with one another to create magical musical memories.

Inglewood Sunfest – On Saturday, July 30th in Inglewood, join thousands of revelers in one of the city’s premiere street festivals which also serves as a launching pad for Calgary’s Fringe Festival. With more than 200 vendors, delectable food, live music and entertainment, Sunfest is the quintessential neighbourhood street festival with amazing street performers and buskers. Don’t forget to save room for the pie eating contest!
Pet-A-Palooza – Come on down to Eau Claire on July 25th and 26th. Bring the entire family – including the four-legged members. All the cool cats and dogs will be there with more than 80 exhibitors, animal rescue organizations and live music. Come early and find the perfect spot to view the Running of the Bulls (of the French and English bulldog variety, that is).
Taste of Calgary –Calling all foodies!! Calgary is rapidly gaining a reputation as an international culinary destination and a Taste of Calgary is the perfect showcase for the city’s culinary artists. Drop by Eau Claire from Thursday, August 11th thru Sunday, August 14th to sample menu items from Calgary’s finest chefs. Bon appetit!
Calgary’s vibrant and eclectic mix of summer festivals is a direct reflection of the city’s youthful, multi-cultural base. Once the summer festival season winds down, take solace in knowing that another round of autumn festivals is just around the corner.
